Even though the flight from Miami to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands was only a few hours long, I still ended up nodding off halfway through. I’d barely gotten any sleep the night before, my head too full of dark possibilities for me to rest, and when I woke with a jolt upon landing, it took me a moment to remember where I was.

Tortola was the largest of the British Virgin Islands, a sunny, warm, beautiful destination spot that really had no business being the location of gang activity. And, if the reports we’d read were to be believed, up until recently, it wasn’t. Whatever, or whoever, had caused the sudden increase in gang activity on the island had turned the once peaceful and nearly crimeless paradise into a complete headache for the Secret Intelligence Service, the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the FBI.

“What was that guy’s name again?” Holm asked as we got up to retrieve our luggage from the overhead compartment. “The MI6 agent?”

“Uh, Grey, I think?” I muttered as I tried to recall what Diane had told us.

This morning had gone by in a bit of a rush. I’d been on my way to the airport when Diane had called me to inform me there’d been a minor change of plans. Rather than working directly with local law enforcement, as we usually would have, apparently an MI6 agent was flying to meet up with us, all the way from London. She’d said something about strings being pulled and assistance arriving from a high place, but she hadn’t had much time to elaborate, or maybe she hadn’t wanted to. The entire conversation had been very “hush-hush,” and I got the feeling that maybe there was something suspicious about the strings that had been pulled.

In any case, it didn’t really matter to me. At this point, I was willing to break the law if it meant getting Tessa back just a little faster. Guilt and remorse still clawed away at my gut every time I thought about how long she’d been held hostage now, waiting for help to arrive.

“And he’s not supposed to get here for a few more hours, right?” Holm asked as we trudged our way off the crowded plane. It was the middle of summer, which meant it was the height of the busy season for eager tourists waiting to spend their hard-earned vacations lounging on the beach and soaking in the warm rays of the Caribbean sun.

“Yeah,” I grumbled, already feeling annoyed at the idea of having to wait. It was understandable, of course, as London was a bit further from the Caribbean than Miami. It still didn’t make me feel any less irritated, though. Every second we spent not working was another that Tessa was—

No. I forced myself to stop letting my imagination run wild. It wouldn’t do me any good. I’d never act like this for any other case, so I couldn’t allow myself to do it now. I just needed to remain unbiased and level-headed.
